A Detailed 5-Day Burundi Safari

Day 1: Arrival Upon arrival check in at Hotel Le Chandelier or similar.

Day 2: Bujumbura-Rumonge

You will take a half-day cultural tour of Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, on your first day there. While in Rusizi National Park, you may see a memorial honouring independence heroes and, if you’d like, take a boat excursion to see hippos, a variety of birds, and the point where the Rusizi River meets Lake Tanganyika. One may get a fascinating look at Bujumbura from the Belvedere Climb.

Afterwards, you’ll pay a visit to the Explorers’ Memorial, a massive rock on the outskirts of Bujumbura that honours the historic encounter between Stanley and Livingstone, two renowned European explorers.

Overnight at Resha Saga Resort or similar.

Day 3: Source of Nile-Karera Waterfalls

As you make your way towards the Nile River’s headwaters after breakfast, you’ll see scenic landscapes and sprawling tea plantations along the way. The breathtaking Karera waterfalls are waiting for you—get your camera ready!

Gitega, Burundi’s historic colonial capital, is a scenic drive from Karera Waterfalls. Stay at the Tropitel Hotel Gitega for the night.

Day 4: Gitega – Gishora Drum Sanctuary

The National Museum in Gitega houses ethnographic and archaeological artefacts, and the colonial architecture of this former capital will be on display on the fourth day.

A visit to the world-renowned Gishora drum sanctuary to see a performance by the drummers is on the agenda for a later time. The Burundi traditional traditions are brought to life at the drum sanctuary. A complex of buildings like the one at the Gishora site is very unusual. Located on a hilltop 7 km outside of Gitega’s center, the Gishora location is also the site of two ceremonial drums: For Ruciteme, we clear the forest, and for Murimirwa, we cultivate. Both names are closely associated with fertility and farming. No beating is ever applied to these two ceremonial drums. On national holidays and other important occasions, the Batimbo will also play the conventional drums kept in the drum sanctuary.

You will return to Bujumbura for the night at Hotel Le Chandelier or a comparable establishment after lunch.

Day 5: Airport transfer
