Luxury 5 Days Uganda Self Drive Itinerary Kampala to Bwindi

Day 1: Exploring the Charms of Kampala

Commence your journey at the vibrant capital city of Kampala. Commence the day with a visit to the famous Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides insight into the rich history of the Buganda Kingdom. Wander through the lively markets of Owino and Nakasero, where one may purchase traditional crafts and sample local specialities.

Dining Suggestion: For a true experience of Ugandan food, visit the renowned Ekitoobero Restaurant, celebrated for its substantial servings.

Afternoon Activity: Visit the Uganda Museum to gain insights into the nation’s rich cultural legacy. Conclude the day with a sunset boat on Lake Victoria, savouring stunning vistas and relaxing after a day of sightseeing.

Day 2: Journey to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Commence a picturesque journey from Kampala to the captivating Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its biodiversity and habitat of the endangered mountain gorillas. We drove in and flew out as it was a more economical choice; but, if you are coming and there is any likelihood of rain or if your schedule is constrained, I would advise flying both ways. Be aware that there are luggage restrictions for the small aircraft, so plan to pack a soft bag weighing no more than around 15 kilogrammes.

Accommodation Feature: Register at the Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge, situated in the forest’s periphery. I provided a room tour and described our views; we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The personnel are exceptional. The lodge presents stunning vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes and ensures a comfortable, environmentally sustainable experience.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Today marks the long-anticipated gorilla trip in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest! Accompany seasoned guides on an expedition into the lush foliage to observe these magnificent beings in their native environment. Ensure you document the experience while respecting the gorillas’ space and adhering to principles for responsible wildlife observation; carry a zoom camera since you will be approximately 10 feet away. Here is a video in which I analyse our day of gorilla trekking, along with another video detailing my attire and my preferred choices. It is advisable to include hiking pants such as these and gaiters for valid reasons.

Lunch Suggestion: Savour a packed lunch supplied by the resort throughout your trekking expedition.

Evening Relaxation: Repose at the lodge, exchanging narratives of your gorilla experience with fellow travellers. We forged friendships through discussions about our experiences. Enjoy the expansive views from the patio while relishing a delectable dinner made with locally-sourced ingredients. If you are at the Nkuringo Lodge and appreciate ginger, order the Dawa tea, which is prepared with fresh ginger, honey, and a comforting ambiance.

Day 4: Cultural Immersion in Nkuringo Village

Engage with the local culture by dedicating a day to the next village. Commence with the Batwa cultural tour to gain insights into community-driven conservation initiatives. It is remarkable to observe the local community’s mutual support. Engage in a traditional dance performance and observe the vivid customs of the Bakiga people.

Optional Activity: Participate on a guided nature walk to see the plants and fauna in the vicinity of Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge.

Day 5: Farewell to Bwindi and Return to Kampala

Depart from the enchanting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and return to Kampala. Visit the equator for a distinctive photographic opportunity and purchase souvenirs at the craft markets en route, whether you opt to drive or fly from Kisoro.

Our time in Uganda was spent exploring, however there still an abundance to discover; it was one of the countries that most astonished us during our journey.
