Self-Drive Logistics & Vehicle Choice

Driving in Tanzania requires a sturdy vehicle and patience. A fully equipped 4×4 vehicle (like a Toyota Land Cruiser) with a pop-up roof or rooftop tent is absolutely non-negotiable for the Northern Circuit.

Road Conditions: Left-hand side driving. Main highways are excellent tarmac, but the roads from the Ngorongoro gate into the Serengeti are notoriously corrugated, dusty, and punishing on tires.

Navigation: Cell coverage is non-existent in deep park sectors. Download Maps.me or Tanzania Offline Maps before departing, and ensure your car rental company provides a satellite tracking device or radio.

Park Fees: Tanzania park permits (TANAPA and NCAA fees) cannot be paid in cash at the gate. You must pre-arrange a park QR code or permit card through your car rental agency or via the official government portals online.
