Some of the best wildlife watching in Africa is found in Botswana. The mix of environments leads in a wonderful array of animals — both fauna and vegetation. Botswana also has some spectacular scenery – from the harsh Kalahari and stark Makgadikgadi Pans to the luscious Okavango Delta.

The Okavango Delta is a natural wonder pouring out over 15000 sq km into the desert dunes, and is perhaps the most famous of Botswana’s attractions. Moremi Game Reserve on the east side of the delta is one of the best wildlife locations in Africa. The western delta has deep lagoons and riverine woodlands that are great birdwatching destinations.

Moremi Game Reserve: Famous for the Khwai area and its deep sand tracks. You will encounter incredible predator sightings and river crossings.

Chobe National Park: Head toward the Savuti marsh (known for its lion prides) before ending at the Chobe Riverfront to see massive elephant herds.

Makgadikgadi Pans: Ideal for a completely different landscape, offering surreal salt flats and desert wildlife.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve: Exploring the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) on a self-drive is the ultimate wild Africa adventure. A 4×4 vehicle with high clearance, two spare tires, and extensive self-sufficiency (water, food, and fuel) are absolute musts.

Deception Valley Private Reserve: Self-driving the 43,000-hectare Deception Valley Private Reserve in the Kalahari requires a high-clearance 4×4. Located on the northeastern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) at 20°57’10” S, 23°38’59” E, the remote reserve offers excellent sightings of black-maned lions, cheetahs, and brown hyenas, free from national park restrictions.

Kasane: Self-driving from Kasane is the ultimate way to explore Northern Botswana’s wilderness, primarily the Chobe Riverfront and Savuti. You will need a fully-equipped 4×4 with high clearance, recovery gear, and a rooftop tent.

Nxai Pan National Park: Nxai Pan National Park is an accessible and rewarding self-drive destination in northern Botswana, famous for surreal landscapes and seasonal wildlife migrations.

Okavango Delta: Self-driving the Okavango Delta is an adventurous, cost-effective way to experience Botswana’s wildlife, focusing on the Moremi Game Reserve and surrounding community areas like Khwai. A robust 4×4, serious off-road driving skills, and careful planning are required for deep sand and water crossings.
