How to navigate in Madagascar during a self-drive

Operating a vehicle in Madagascar is rather straightforward. There are only a limited number of ‘highways,’ referred to as ‘Route Nationals’ (RNs), which resemble two-lane roads with several potholes. Deviating from the Route National presents increased challenges. We frequently navigated a labyrinth of narrow sandy alleyways that were absent from any map. Conversely, the maps depicted streets that did not exist in reality. In Diego Suarez, Google Maps indicated that we needed to drive off a cliff to access the subsequent street. In Mahajanga, Maps Me sent us via a refuse-laden path to the nearest beach, a route we cannot endorse due to its unpleasant odour.

Nevertheless, with a modicum of common sense, the assistance of Google Maps, Maps.Me, and the guidance of amiable locals, we consistently navigated our route. It required slightly longer time than expected.

Travel tip: Prior to embarking on your journey, download offline maps from Google Maps and Maps.Me, and consistently utilise both applications concurrently. This provides an alternative when any of the two applications presents an unusual route.

Road Trip Madagascar

Road Trip Madagascar
A 3-week road trip is the perfect amount of time to experience Madagascar’s most iconic highlights: the lush Eastern rainforests, the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, the jagged Tsingy stone formations, and the dramatic canyons of the RN7 southern highway. Because Madagascar’s infrastructure is challenging and public transport is slow, the most efficient approach is a 4×4 vehicle rental with a local driver to maximize your route.

2-Week Madagascar Self-Drive
The absolute best way to experience Madagascar in 3 weeks is the Classic RN7 Route combined with the Wild West (Morondava and Tsingy). This comprehensive loop highlights the island’s ultimate icons: otherworldly rock forests, towering baobabs, dense rainforests, and an abundance of lemurs.

Madagascar itinerary 10 days

1-Week Madagascar Itinerary
For a 1-week trip to Madagascar, you must focus on one specific region because poor road infrastructure and vast distances make it impossible to see the whole country in 7 days. The absolute best option for first-time visitors is the Classic Wildlife & Rainforest Circuit (East). It minimizes heavy travel days and guarantees unforgettable encounters with lemurs and chameleons.

Madagascar itinerary 7 Days

10-Day Madagascar Itinerary
The most popular and logistically realistic route for a first-time, 10-day trip is the Classic Southern Route along Route Nationale 7 (RN7). It provides the perfect balance of Madagascar’s famous lemurs, lush rainforests, epic desert canyons, and white-sand beaches. Because of Madagascar’s rugged infrastructure and long driving times, hiring a private 4×4 with a local driver-guide is highly recommended to complete this itinerary safely.

Madagascar itinerary 5 days

5-Day Madagascar Itinerary
Because Madagascar is massive and its road infrastructure is underdeveloped, a 5-day trip requires staying in one region to avoid spending your entire vacation driving. The most seamless and rewarding 5-day option is the Andasibe Rainforest Circuit. This route allows you to see Madagascar’s iconic lemurs and unique biodiversity without relying on unreliable domestic flights.

8-day tour in Madagascar

8-Day Madagascar Itinerary
